My favorite part of this recent editorial photoshoot with NIKE Korea’s CFO Justin Woo was our run in with security. After shooting some portraiture of Justin in NIKE’s Gangnam head office we went out to the front of the building for the running shot to cap off the day. Justin had barely tied his laces before security showed up and told us we couldn’t shoot there.
We argued with the guard for a while, but with the already limited time on the clock running out I thanked him for his help and told him we’d go somewhere else. I’d arrived to the shoot an hour early to scope shooting locations, and I knew there was an area to shoot just around the corner, still on the property but narrowly out of sight.
We had no more than 10 minutes there before another guard arrived to wave us off. By that time we’d made the shot and were walking back to his office sharing a laugh at getting kicked out like skateboarders at a spot. Skateboarding taught me everything I need to know about dodging security and shooting on the sly: arrive early, stay out of the guard’s sightline, and when you do inevitably get bust, make it clear you were never really there because you’re always on your way out.
